Frequently Asked Dental Questions - Westerville, OH
Easy-to-Understand Answers to Common Dental Questions
While you can search for information about dentistry and oral health online, the answers you get straight from the mouth of an expert tend to be more dependable. Below are some particularly common dental questions along with some helpful answers. You can always reach out to us if there is anything else you want to know about our services or the best way to care for your smile.
Are you willing to see my children at your dental office?
Yes! Our team at Tzagournis Dental Group of Westerville is happy to bring reliable dental care to your entire family. We’ll take whatever steps are needed to help your child relax whenever they visit our practice. After performing a quick examination, we’ll let you know where your little one’s smile is development-wise and let you know what steps you might need to take. Our team is more than happy to accommodate children with special needs.
How frequently should I schedule a visit with my dentist?
The recommendation for most people is one dental checkup and cleaning every six months, which comes out to two dental visits a year. An exception is if you are currently suffering from some form of gum disease; for the sake of your oral health, you might need to come into our office every three or four months instead. Our team will let you know how many visits per year are appropriate based on your situation.
Should I stop flossing if my gums are bleeding?
It’s actually the opposite; bleeding gums are a sign that you should start flossing more frequently. That’s because bleeding is often a consequence of early gum disease. Since your toothbrush can’t clean the spaces between your teeth very well, flossing is often your best option for removing plaque and food debris from these areas. In many cases, the health of your gums should improve after flossing daily for about a week. If the bleeding continues, contact our team right away.
Is it necessary to brush my teeth after lunch?
You probably already brush after breakfast and after dinner, but what about after lunch? The answer varies from person to person. If you’re currently in good oral health while brushing twice a day, then there’s likely no need for you to brush more often. On the other hand, if you’re brushing two times a day but still have an unusually high risk for cavities, then brushing after lunch could be a good idea. Talk to our team members to see what they recommend based on your specific oral health needs.
I haven’t been to the dentist in a while. Will that change what happens during my visit?
No. The steps of a routine dental checkup and cleaning aren’t any different for patients who haven’t visited the dentist in a long time. You do not have to worry about any judgment from our team; we’ll treat you like any other patient and simply do whatever is necessary to protect and improve the health of your smile.
