Reasons Why Tooth Extractions Are Necessary

We will always do everything in our power to help patients keep their teeth. However, this isn’t always a viable option. Here are some of the most common reasons why tooth extractions are necessary:

  • Severe, irreparable damage or decay to a tooth
  • A tooth is impacted and unable to properly erupt
  • A primary tooth isn’t falling out on its own
  • To allow a patient to undergo orthodontic treatment
  • An extraction is necessary for the long-term success of a restoration
  • There isn’t enough room in the mouth to accommodate wisdom teeth

The Process of Removing a Tooth

Teeth are removed by one of two methods – pulling or surgical extraction. In both cases, we begin by numbing the area around the tooth with a local anesthetic. Sedation options are also available for additional comfort.

Pulling is only used for teeth that have completely emerged from the gumline. Then, your dentist uses a clasping tool to shift the tooth around until it releases from the jaw and gums. When pulling a tooth isn’t an option, it needs to be surgically extracted. For this procedure, a small incision is made in the gum tissue, allowing us to reach the whole tooth to remove it completely.

During your visit with us, we will determine which extraction method, if any, is right for you. We can also discuss tooth replacement options to prevent future complications related to tooth loss.
